On Wednesday last week, we had a team wine training afternoon with our wonderful wine supplier Pierre from Berkmann Wine Cellars. When I saw ‘wine training’ in the diary, I was excited – I love wine, and I love learning about wine, in fact, the last wine training I attended I got a bit too over excited and can’t remember much about the wine! So, I promised myself that I would listen closely, take notes and actually take time to taste the wine rather than just drink it and move onto the next one!
Pierre is a lovely French wine merchant, (some have been known to call him a Silver Fox!) who knows the trends of the wine world and what customers want. He taught us how to taste and describe the wines to our customers to help them to pick the right wines for their wedding experience. I did take notes, which massively helped – because once you have tasted the 9th wine on our list, it is hard to remember what the first one tastes like! I was pleasantly surprised by the Rosé wines we have on our list, as a ‘Sauvignon Blanc with ice’ girl, I wouldn’t normally go for a Rosé as it takes me right back to my teenage years, trying look sophisticated drinking White Zinfandel and not really enjoying it! However, our Rosé’s are both delicious and not what I expected at all, not too sweet but with plenty of flavour.
It is so important for us to know our wines, some of our couples are wine drinkers and know exactly what they are looking for – in which case we can steer them in the right direction and look for something a little bit different for them; other couples don’t really drink wine, so are just looking for easy-drinking beverages that will suit their wedding party. I am more confident now that I can recommend the right wines to couples with different needs. The beauty of us having our own wine supplier, is that, even though our wine list is compact, if needed, we are able to source different wines from other regions and grapes, therefore catering for every couple’s individual wedding experience.
Our wines are available to taste at our menu tasting evenings, or when you come to Doxford Barns for your planning meetings with your wedding coordinators. For the wine drinkers amongst us, you know what you like, but my advice is to try something different, tickle your taste buds and introduce them to something you’ve never tried before. For the guys and girls out there who don’t often drink wine, try as many different types as you can – as a wine drinker, I believe that there is a wine out there for everyone (but I would say that!). Book into a menu tasting or planning meeting with us and we can help you choose the perfect wines to suit you and your guests on your wedding day!
